Joe Johnson, snooker’s 1986 world champion, is bringing back the Golden Age of snooker – and with it, its characters. Sporting Fare could NOT be happier!
The inaugural World Seniors Championship, which boasts a prize of £50,000, will take place in November this year at the Cedar Court Hotel in Bradford.
Just take a look at this line up!
Joe Johnson himself. Steve “Interesting” Davis, Jimmy “Whirlwind” White, Dennis Taylor, Ken Doherty, John Parrot and…wait for it…Alex “Hurricane” Higgins!
And all these guys will be joined by one qualifier from a qualifying event that will include Mike Hallett, Nigel Bond, Darren Morgan, Joe Swail, David Taylor and Dave Harold. They will all play to face Peter Ebdon in a final play off for the final spot in the Championship.
Johnson has the support of potential new snooker supremo Barry Hearn and the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association as well, so hopefully this won’t be a one off event and, should Hearn get what he wants in snooker, be supported financially in the future.
How can you not possibly be excited by that? The tournament will be played over three, five and seven frames through each round and promises to be a nostalgic event. We can’t wait.
