Ceni scored his 100th (we’ll be generous) goal from a free kick, the latest in 56 he has scored that way, the others coming from penalties. No goals from open play? Pah!

“It was beautiful. As a goalkeeper you don’t enter the match thinking about scoring a goal, but it happened just as I wanted: with a free kick, deciding an important match. For me, it doesn’t matter that it was against Corinthians, but for the fans it must have been important.”

I must admit, if Edwin van der Sar scored against Manchester City from a free kick I’d probably be going mental for several days. And we all know how crazy about their football – and their derbies in particular – the Brazilians are! Special goal, special moment, special man.

Speaks Scottish, apparently...

There’s nothing like a good loser…and Gennaro Gattuso is nothing like a good loser! Following his AC Milan side’s 1-0 ‘shock’ defeat to Tottenham Hotspur he had an altercation with Spurs coach Joe Jordan in which he appeared to attempt to headbutt the Scot.

Gattuso had previously clashed with Jordan during the second half when a horrific challenge from former Arsenal midfielder Flamini on Vedran Corluka resulted in just a yellow card. You’d think Gattuso would know he’d picked on the wrong guy after his time in Scotland, but no, he steamed right in. Take a look at the post-match incident:

Gattuso has since apologised for his actions, of course, with the rather amusing line:

I was nervous. We were both speaking Scottish, something that I learned when I played in his home city of Glasgow, but I can’t tell you what we said. I didn’t want to argue with players and I did it with him, but I was wrong to do what I have done. I will have to await what they decide.

Spurs recorded this famous win in the San Siro with an 80th minute winner from Peter Crouch, by the way. It sets them up nicely for the home leg at White Hart Lane and will go down as one of Redknapp’s best ever victories as a manager.

Oops, he's done it again...

Richard Keys and Andy Gray’s sexist comments before the Wolves v Liverpool match were not the first time one or both have got themselves in hot water. Sexism, swearing and general ridicule are a common occurrence for these two super-presenters.

I’m not suggesting they should be cut from our screens. I find it both offensive and amusing in equal measure, depending. Anyway, here’s a little recap of Sky Sports’ dynamic duo in action, together and apart.

Keys goes it alone to slag off Scottish football, swear and show off his ‘fun’ side with a prank on Jamie Redknapp. The man is a genius, obviously…

And finally, Andy Gray might rescue his career if this footage gets aired enough. Or not. He does what a lot of women right now would like to do, I’m sure – kick Keys.

Did what he had to do

Controversy seems to be part and parcel of Spurs’ visits to Old Trafford more often than not and the game on Saturday October 30th was no different. With Manchester United winning 1-0 in the second half there was an incident involving Nani for which United felt they should have had a penalty. Referee Mark Clattenburg felt differently, however, and didn’t blow his whistle. All well and good except for what happened next.

Nani briefly grabbed the ball in his hands, no doubt convinced he was getting the penalty, before Spurs keeper Gomes took it off him, rolled it along the floor and then, for some unknown reason, stopped before clearing it. Nani, now on his feet, realises the referee hasn’t blown his whistle, asks if the ball is still in play, gets the nod and taps it into the net. Goal given.

The trouble is, that moment of handling the ball means the goal shouldn’t have stood. The linesman (sorry, assistant referee!) flagged, quite rightly, for the handball but was overruled by Clattenburg. The goal stood, to the fury of the Tottenham players. What Nani did was fine really, the ball was in open play and he did what he should have done, tucked it away. Gomes should have played to the whistle and not dawdled. What this is, is a case of seriously bad refereeing and this morning Clattenburg will no doubt be feeling a bit of an idiot. It’s very harsh on Tottenham but it’s not the first time such a thing has happened in this fixture.

Remember this from a few of years ago when Mendes tried a long range effort over Roy Carroll?

It’s no wonder Tottenham haven’t won at Old Trafford since 1989!

Fergie: "shocked" and "disappointed"

Sir Alex Ferguson has just confirmed in a press conference at Old Trafford that Wayne Rooney wants to LEAVE Manchester United.

Apparently, David Gill, United’s chief executive, has spoken to Rooney’s agent Paul Stretford and was told the player wants out. Fergie says he’s ‘”bemused” but has not shut the door on the player staying.

There is a contract on the table that Rooney is free to sign if he changes his mind. Basically, the ball is in his court.

It was a masterful performance from Ferguson, offering full disclosure on the situation. How Rooney can make a U-turn on his decision now and still be made welcome at Old Trafford is unclear, however.

Facebook and Twitter are already full of angry Manchester United supporters saying if he wants to go, just go. Nobody is bigger than the club is the general consensus.

In a pre-recorded interview with MUTV Ferguson has said he is “shocked” and “disappointed”, he’s had a meeting with Rooney in which the player repeated his wish to leave. Ferguson asks only that Rooney respects the club but isn’t sure that’s happening with what has been said in the press about a falling out.

No doubt more to come on this from the Rooney camp but it seems like Manchester United and Ferguson have said all they are about to say and it’s down to Rooney now.
